Whether your problem is caused from injury or from inflammation
or degeneration, the result is often pain, stiffness and limitation
of function, or all of these. The length of time that you are impaired
can vary from a few days to months or even years depending on the
severity of your condition. Fortunately, people have the ability
to heal and repair.
Exercise has been proven to help this recovery process. By stretching
and moving a body segment throughout its range of motion, all structures
in that area are affected in a positive way: muscles, joints, ligaments,
blood supply and nerves. Many factors such as disease, disuse and
immobilization may result in muscle weakness. An appropriate strengthening
program is an integral part of your recovery if your goal is to
regain overall physical function.
The best way to prevent injury is by having strong, flexible muscles
and joints that resist strain and injury. Below are some exercises
that may help you prevent or recover from impairments.
NOTE: We recommend avoiding any exercise or stretch that causes
pain. It is important to visit with your physician to determine
if these exercises are appropriate for your specific injury. We
understand that exercise is a valuable tool to a healthy lifestyle,
but may be inappropriate for some injuries. If you diagnose or treat
yourself, you assume the responsibility for your actions.
